How to Paint ATV Plastic
Here is a guide I made for people who want to make their ATV Plastic look new but don’t want to buy new ATV Plastics.
The first step is to clean the ATV plastic. This is done by first washing the plastic with a mild soap and water with a lot of elbow grease. You really want to do this step because a lot of time people wax their ATV plastic to keep it shiny. If the wax residue is still on the plastic the paint will not stick to it properly.
The next step is to sand the ATV plastic. You want to sand the entire surface of the ATV Plastic with 180 grit sandpaper, both top and bottom of the ATV plastics. You want to do this to make sure that the old discoloration from old age is off the plastic. This step is also important because if the flakey sun rotten part of the ATV plastic is still their when you go to paint it will not adhere correctly.
Once you have sanded the ATV plastic. Scrub all the plastic with scuff pad this can be the green or red ones you can find them at auto zone or advanced automotive stores in the paint section. . This will remove any contaminants that have been ground into the plastic. Once you are done sand the ATV plastic again with 180 grit sand paper.
| Now you should sandblast the ATV plastic with 80 grit aluminum oxide they should have this at any home supply store. After you have sandblaster the ATV plastic you should clean it with super clean plastic cleaner. Wipe the whole thing down and don’t miss any spots. |
You are now ready to put on the first coat of primer I would recommend a high build primer to fill in any scratches. You should allow this to fully dry Now it is time to sand your ATV plastic with 320 grit sand paper. Sand all of the ATV Plastics not just the top.
Now that your plastic is sanded to 320 grit you should apply a sealer coat and once that dries you are ready to paint your ATV plastic with a base coat clear coat application.
As long as you follow these steps and add flex coat to the sealer your ATV plastic should look really good .
